on the scale
The scales are made of a succession of notes. They
form the basis for the music as well as are the alphabetical
letters for the written.
It is thus important to know the way of building the
scales, their positions and their use. This permet to
understand the implied rules of the music. Moreover,
that makes it possible to acquire more facility to improvise
and analyze the parts of other guitarists. I propose
to you, with this series of chronicles devoted to the
scales, to look further into this technique which is
extremely useful in composition, in improvisation as
well as in musical interpretation.

How to practice the scales
?
A good way of practicing the scale is to arm yourself
with patience and to gradually keep going without jumping
any steps. First you have to execute the scale as slowly
as possible (to ascend and descend the scale) while
being as clean as you can. After a few days or a few
weeks, you can practice a little faster, but make sure
you are still carrying it out while remaining very precise
at the time of your play. Practicing without the addition
of effects like the reverb, the delay or the distortion,
may help you to listen if you play cleanly (properly).
The use of metronome can be very useful to help you
to maintain a regular rhythm as long as possible.
I would like to bring your attention , that, it's
not necessary for you to practice for hours and hours,
or even to become slave of your practice by restrictinng
yourself to scales because this attitude can involve
negative effect and make lose your spontaneity when
you improvise.
Learn from the licks of other
guitarists:
A significant part of training of the guitar is made
by the practicing licks of other guitarists. You are
not obligated to learn the entire parts of a song from
ather guitarist. But you can only learn a few licks,
which may seem a lot more interesting for you.
It's not necessary to limit your practices to a guitarist
or a style of music. Explore the world of the rock,
blues, country or jazz. This will allow you to open
your horizons and to know better as a guitarist, which
can be a large asset for you.
The improvisation: an important
stage:
It is essential to practice improvisation, because
it will teach you to develop a personal style and not
to force you with the ritual " scales ". The
first times, to find ideas will seem very difficult
for you, but it's necessary to persevere. Much time
must be devoted to your instrument and it will give
you an imcomparable feeling.
